Tarik Tihan neuropathologist

Tarik Tihan, MD, PhD

Neuropathologist

Specialties: Brain and spinal cord tumors, seizure-related disorders, cerebrovascular malformations

Dr. Tihan is a neuropathologist specializing in the diagnosis of brain and spinal cord tumors. He leads multiple research collaborations aimed at better defining brain tumor entities, based on their molecular signatures and novel diagnostic or prognostic markers. Dr. Tihan’s primary research goal is to develop a better understanding of the critical elements for histological classification of primary brain tumors, with a particular focus on pediatric brain tumors. His work has contributed to the understanding of biological behavior and molecular features in some tumors such as pilomyxoid astrocytomas and other distinctive pediatric subtypes and prognostic markers. He participates in the World Health Organization efforts for the classification of Central nervous system tumors as well as tumors of the endocrine organs. He has lectured about brain tumors in approximately 20 countries in nearly 100 institutions.

Dr. Tihan also has a strong commitment to teaching and educational activities, with a specific emphasis on international outreach. In efforts with many colleagues and organizations, he hopes to address technological and economical gaps in the developing world, so that colleagues from across the world can contribute to and advance the field of science as an integrated community.
