Clinical Application of Cognitive Rehabilitation

Bringing together leading clinicians and scientists, the UCSF Cognition in Brain Cancer Symposium, held on October 1, 2020, discussed the latest in our understanding of cognitive impairment and rehabilitative treatment for patients with brain tumors. UCSF neuropsychologists Christina Weyer Jamora, RN, PhD and Melissa Brie, PsyD, reviewed the clinical translation of cognitive rehabilitation for managing cognitive impairments in patients with brain tumors at UCSF.

Cognitive rehabilitation is well-established for addressing the long-term effects of neurological conditions like traumatic brain injury and stroke. Interventions fall into two main categories: retraining and functional compensation.

Through a clinical trial at UCSF, researchers are studying the feasibility of various cognitive rehabilitation strategies in patients with low-grade gliomas.

More resources relating to cognitive rehabilitation strategies for people with affected by brain injury are available through the Schurig Center and the Centre for Neuro Skills.
