Metformin and Neuroplasticity

UCSF neurosurgeon Shawn Hervey-Jumper, MD, discusses recent work demonstrating metformin's effects in the brain. In a preclinical study, researchers showed that metformin promoted recovery in oligodendrocyte precursor cells. Additionally, in a small pilot clinical trial of 24 pediatric brain tumor survivors, the scientists found metformin was associated with better cognitive performance than the placebo drug.
