Sabine Mueller, MD, PhD

Specialties: Pediatric brain tumors, including therapeutic studies and late effect studies

Dr. Mueller is is the Director of the Pediatric Brain Tumor Center and a professor of neurology, neurosurgery, and pediatrics at UC San Francisco, as well as a professor of pediatrics at the University of Zurich, Switzerland. She is a board-certified pediatric neuro-oncologist with extensive expertise in the care of children and young adults with brain tumors. Dr. Mueller is the Co-Founder and Project Lead of the Pacific Pediatric Neuro-Oncology Consortium (PNOC), and leads its international clinical trial efforts. She also serves as one of the leaders of the pediatric malignancy program at the UCSF Helen Diller Comprehensive Cancer Center. Prior to her medical training, she worked in the biotechnology sector as a scientist, Director of Genomics, and project leader for the brain tumor program at AGY Therapeutics in South San Francisco. 

Dr. Mueller received her MD and PhD from the University of Hamburg, Germany, and completed postgraduate training at Harvard University and UCSF. She is triple board-certified in pediatrics, child neurology, and neuro-oncology. 

Her research focuses on the development of novel therapies for pediatric and AYA brain tumors, with a particular emphasis on diffuse midline gliomas and improving long-term neurocognitive outcomes. She is the founder and Medical Lead of the Diffuse Midline Glioma Center in Zurich and serves as Executive Co-Chair of the Childhood Brain Tumor Network (CBTN). Additionally, she is an affiliated group leader at the Princess Máxima Center for Pediatric Oncology in the Netherlands and co-leads the Brain Tumor Committee of the Innovative Therapies for Children with Cancer Consortium (ITCC). Her work has been supported by numerous competitive grants, including from the U.S. Department of Defense and the National Cancer Institute.
